Democracy International (DI) is seeking to hire a Senior Researcher – Global Greening for an anticipated 18-month UNESCO research project opportunity. The project aims to develop a global mapping of the inclusion of greening, global citizenship, and gender equality in national curricular frameworks and syllabi in primary- and secondary-level education. The objectives of this project are to:

  • Equip UNESCO with globally-comparable data and rigorous analyses demonstrating the extent to which UNESCO Member States currently integrate key elements of greening, global citizenship and gender equality into their curricula; and
  • Provide expert inputs to UNESCO to guide the development of a strategy for expanding SDG global monitoring indicator 4.7.1 that measures the extent to which not only greening but also gender equality and global citizenship concepts are integrated into curricula and syllabi documents.

Essential Job Duties

The position’s responsibilities will include:

Programmatic

  • Provide technical expertise to assess how education for sustainable development is incorporated in national curricular frameworks and syllabi in primary- and secondary-level education;
  • Support data collection and analysis for the program’s desk review on inclusion of global citizenship and gender equality in national curricula;
  • Provide effective, accurate, and timely analysis across global regions, identifying trends across countries and subjects, while considering the nuances between global and local perspectives;
  • Present findings from analysis of inclusion of greening in national curriculum documents to relevant stakeholders;
  • Assure that all analysis performed is technically sound and appropriate to meet project objectives; and
  • Support the preparation of deliverables such as literature reviews, data analyses, and findings.

Qualifications

  • A PhD (preferred) or Master’s degree and 8+ years’ relevant work experience;
  • Minimum five years of work experience in researching global greening;
  • Strong demonstrated skills in conducting qualitative and/or quantitative research and data analysis in relevant fields, preferably related to curricula frameworks;
  • Experience and/or familiarity with UNESCO preferred;
  • Excellent oral communication and report writing skills in English required; and
  • Proficiency in a language other than English (Arabic, French, Mandarin Chinese, Spanish) desirable but not required.
