We are currently looking to recruit a Trade Officer that will provide operational support to the Department for Business and Trade (DBT) Team within the British Embassy, Montevideo during a period of Maternity leave. DBT Uruguay supports UK companies looking to grow their exports to Uruguay across all sectors of the economy. This is an exciting opportunity to work in a fast-paced, multicultural, interesting environment. The jobholder will report directly to the Country Director.
Roles and responsibilities:
The selected candidate for this role will be part of the DBT Uruguay team and (subject to reasonable changes) will be expected to:
- Provide support to UK companies to export to the Uruguay market through well-planned interventions (meetings, introductions, events, marketing, partnerships, government engagement) contributing to the delivery of an ambitious export value target.
- Contribute to a diverse pipeline of export projects and commercial opportunities for UK companies, working collaboratively in the Uruguay and Southern Cone teams and with UK sector specialists.
- Develop a good understanding of market access barriers affecting UK companies wishing to do business in Uruguay, engaging with trade policy focused colleagues to identify ways to address them to support commercial success.
- Build and manage a diverse public and private sector stakeholder network focused on potential Uruguay, buyers of UK exports and UK companies, including account managing relevant stakeholders, applying excellent customer service to increase the probability of successful exports
Support the wider work of DBT, other embassy sections and DBT LATAC when required to deliver shared objectives.

- Fluent Spanish and English (C1 equivalent – written and spoken)

Applicants must have the legal status to live and work in Uruguay in their own right at the time of application.
Employees who are not liable to pay local income tax on their Mission salary, e.g. some non-local national staff and some spouses or partners of UK diplomatic staff, will have their salaries abated by an equivalent amount.
Appointable candidates who were unsuccessful may be placed on a ‘reserve list. If during the reserve period of 6 months the same or largely similar role becomes available, that role may be offered to the second of subsequent candidate.

Working patterns:
Standard working hours: Monday to Thursday 09:00 – 17:30, Friday 09:00 to 14:00. The role will require flexibility and occasionally attending events out of hours. You will need to work in a hybrid manner as part of a wider team (including with colleagues in the region and London), so strong communications skills are essential and will be tested at interview.
